Description

This is a level 2C Art Specialism course for those who have attended Calligraphy previously or who have drawing and painting experience.

This calligraphy course is tailored for intermediate learners and those seeking to enhance their skills, focusing on techniques using double pencils, flat brushes, automatic pens, and Round Hand nibs. Participants will explore Round Hand and Cursive scripts while incorporating colour and simple design layouts, allowing for personal growth in areas of uncertainty. Throughout the course, students will build a portfolio of ideas and letter practice, ultimately developing a refined and confident handwriting style.

This is an Art Specialism course level 2C, upon completing this course, learners can progress onto Level non-funded Art & Design options but cannot redo this course at the same level or book onto lower-level courses or go back to Drawing & Painting courses. Learners can book onto any other Art specialism or Creative & Culture courses from 1A upwards that is new to them with Medway Adult Education.

WHAT WILL I LEARN ON THIS COURSE?
Learners will: 1. Write at least 2 different scripts using double pencils and a flat brush 2. Write least 2 different scripts using Automatic and Round Hand pens 3. Produce al least 1 layout and a finished piece of calligraphy developing a particular script. Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to investigate the possibility of a new art-based career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress

IS THIS COURSE SUITABLE FOR ME?
This course is aimed at learners who: • Already have basic or intermediate art / calligraphy skills • Have done calligraphy courses from 1A – 2B or a drawing/painting course up to level 2C or have similar experience

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS COURSE?
This course is mainly practical, but some sessions will include important theory and professional topics. These may include: • Health and Safety (H&S) • Risk assessments • Public liability

WILL THERE BE ADDITIONAL COSTS?
Learners will need the following tools and equipment please do not purchase until you are sure the course will run: • 3 HB pencils • Roll of masking tape • A3 pad of cartridge paper or individual sheets (The Works in Chatham have an inexpensive range of paper sketch books) • 12” ruler (or longer) • Winsor & Newton or Daler Rowney putty rubber • A craft knife or a scalpel with 10A blade • A ‘T’ and ‘Set’ Square. All these materials can be bought at Hobby Craft, Online at Seawhite, The Range or any other good art shop. Those who already have done some calligraphy, please bring your work box. As the course progresses you will be advised on what to buy at the appropriate stages.

WHAT COULD I GO ON TO DO AFTER THIS COURSE?
Your tutor can talk to you about other subject related course available. Upon completing this course, learners cannot redo this course at the same level or book onto lower-level Drawing & Painting courses. Learners can book onto: • A different funded art specialism course from level 1A • Any other creative and Culture course that is new to them with us at Medway Adult Education from level 1A • A course from our non-funded programme. • BTEC level 2 Art & Design Medway Adult Education works with many partners locally such as MidKent College, Medway School of Arts and the University of Kent; information about their courses can be found in our studios, café and on Moodle.
