Description
Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to investigate the possibility of a new textile-based career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress.
For complete beginners or those wishing to feel a little more confident about using an overlocker (a machine that neatens edges of fabrics). Ideal for those curious about overlockers or those considering purchasing one, or who have one in a cupboard and are avoiding using it!
Join us for this relaxed class where you will learn how to use various functions of the overlocking machine. During the course we will look at threading and changing threads on an overlocker, adjusting tension, and various other functions of the machine.
Join us in our fabulous sewing studio for this friendly, relaxed class where we will explore the overlocker and learn some techniques along the way for a more professional finish and build confidence in its use and functions.
Please do not buy tools and equipment until you know that the course will run.
What will I learn on this course?
Learners will:
1. Learn the basics of threading and tension adjustments and demonstrate on at least one item/ sample
2.. Learn how to set up and take down the machine, demonstrate this on at least 2 occasions.
3.. Practice different sewing techniques with an overlocker and produce an item or samples to demonstrate.
Is this course suitable for me?
Suitable for complete beginners or those who have rusty skills and need a refresher course
Is there anything I need to know about the course?
Learners will need the following tools and equipment please do not purchase until you are sure the course will run:
You will need to prepare the following tools and equipment before the start of the course:
A basic sewing kit including dressmaking scissors, un-picker, tape measure, notebook or folder, small scissors or snips, some sewing threads etc.
You WILL need some scraps of fabric to practice techniques on, an old (CLEAN) sheet or duvet cover is a very economical way to gain lots of practice fabric.
Will there be additional costs?
You will need to buy some fabric - but please wait until after the first week of the course so that we can discuss what you need.

Attendance Policy
In order to get the most out of your course you will need to attend as many sessions as possible. We recommend at least 90%. If you do have a holiday booked during term time please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes. If you are unavoidably ill or unable to attend, please contact 01634 338400 so that we can let your tutor know, and so they can send you any work you may have missed
How are digital skills used and enhanced on this course
Information technology may be used to introduce skills, techniques, and the work of other artists along with safe internet usage. Whilst you do not need any IT skills to enrol on this course, please do speak to the tutor if this is an area you would like to explore.
