Description
Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to look into the possibility of a new woodworking career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress.
Learn the basics to wood carving in this new course from our wood working studio. This course has been designed to welcome new learners in the art of wood carving but may also interest those who may wish to revisit their skills.
You will receive tuition from a skilled professional in tool selection and their correct use. Practical skills will cover chip carving, low relief carving and eventually carving in three dimensions. You will be guided in design planning and transferring plans to wood and will create and complete at least one project from start to finish.
Please do not buy tools and equipment until you are sure the course will run.
What will I learn on this course?
1) Experiment with at least 2 traditional wood carving tools.
2) Create a design plan using accurate measurement for at least one project
3) Transfer the design to wood to create a project which features at least 2 wood carving techniques.
Is this course suitable for me?
This course in an excellent starting point for beginners who want to explore basic wood carving skills or for those with a little experience who want to revisit skills.
Is there anything I need to know about the course?
You will need to follow the rules of the wood work studio to maintain Health & Safety procedures and keep yourself and others safe. Please wear closed toe shoes and bring an apron to every lesson.
Will there be additional costs?
You will require some of your own tools and wood but please wait until after your first session to buy wood and tools so that your tutor can advise you.

Attendance Policy
In order to get the most out of your course you will need to attend as many sessions as possible. We recommend at least 85%. If you do have a holiday booked during term time please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes. If you are unavoidably ill or unable to attend, please contact 01634 338400 so that we can let your tutor know, and so they can send you any work you may have missed
How are digital skills used and enhanced on this course
Learners are encouraged to use the Medway Adult Education Moodle. Many learners use digital cameras to record their work or, for inspirational images that they may later use as a reference. From time to time the tutor may give learners example websites linked to current theme or activity to extend the knowledge or learning undertaken in class. learners will be guided on internet safety.

By participating in a practical class, you accept that you understand that woodwork involves potentially hazardous tools and equipment and that such activity carries the risk of injury. You understand that it is your responsibility to judge your motor skills and physical ability.
It is your responsibility to ensure that by participating in classes and activities from Medway Adult Education, you will not exceed your limits while performing such activity, and you will select the appropriate level of task for your skills and abilities.
You understand that this is a practical activity and you will need to be suitably dressed, you will need protect your work surface and be mindful of the correct Health & Safety processes when working with wood working equipment. MAE is not responsible for damage to items or person.
