Description

Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to look into the possibility of a new art-based career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress.

You will receive tuition to make attractive examples of stained glass work as well as learn traditional techniques to cut, lead, solder, connect glass and create basic designs. You will match colours to create a unique and beautiful piece for your home or as a gift for family and friends.
There are a number of opportunities to exhibit the works you produce throughout the year at our Rochester centre gallery but also at other venues.
  

What will I learn on this course?
Learners will: 1. Cut glass, lead and solder to produce at least 1 element of a basic design. 2. Demonstrate how to copper foil, fuse and slump glass. 3. Produce at least one finished area of a piece of stained glass work. Learners will also be expected to observe appropriate health & safety requirements in the Glass Art Studio as set out in the MAE ground rules /learner contract.

Is this course suitable for me?
Suitable for mixed ability - beginner to experienced learners.

Is there anything I need to know about the course?
If you are a continuing student you will be able to further develop your designs and produce more complex pieces. You will need to bring a pen and notepad to the first class.

Will there be additional costs?
The tutor will advise you on materials required for the course on the first lesson. The first lesson is glass cutting please bring a 12” square of clear glass, 3mm thick. You will be required to purchase your own glass and lead etc. Materials for the first project cost approximately £15. You will need the following tools and equipment: Glass cutter cutting oil grozing pliers 12 inch cutting square lead knife wire brush horseshoe nails straight edge safety glasses. Available from Kansacraft or Creative Glass During the course there will be additional costs depending on what projects you have undertaken and the costs of these materials can be discussed with the tutor.

What could I go on to do after this course?
There are many other arts and craft courses on offer at Medway Adult Education. You may wish to concentrate or develop your skills with a particular medium such as painting in oils, pottery, stained glass or advanced watercolour for example. We also have a BTEC Art and Design Skills course that you could progress towards. Medway Adult Education has a wide range of creative courses and works with many partners locally such as Mid Kent Medway School of Art and the University of Kent; information about their courses can be found in our studios, café and on Moodle. Medway has an exciting and wide-range of events, exhibitions, and activities to inspire and help you make further progress - please see the community noticeboards in the Rochester Centre and again on Moodle. Attendance Policy
In order to get the most out of your course you will need to attend as many sessions as possible. We recommend at least 85%. If you do have a holiday booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes. If you are unavoidably ill or unable to attend, please contact 01634 338400 so that we can let your tutor know, and so they can send you any work you may have missed.

How are digital skills used and enhanced on this course
Information technology may be used to introduce skills, techniques, and the work of other artists along with safe internet usage. Whilst you do not need any IT skills to enrol on this course, please do speak to the tutor if this is an area you would like to explore.

No open toed shoes in room 19. By participating in aa stained glass class, you accept that you understand that stained glass involves potentially hazardous tools and equipment and that such activity carries the risk of injury. You understand that it is your responsibility to judge your motor skills and physical ability. It is your responsibility to ensure that by participating in classes and activities from Medway Adult Education, you will not exceed your limits while performing such activity, and you will select the appropriate level of task for your skills and abilities. You understand that this is an art activity, and you will need to be suitably dressed, you will need protect your work surface and be mindful of the correct Health & Safety processes when working with art equipment.
