Description
Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to investigate the possibility of a new textile-based career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress.
For beginners or those wishing to feel a little more confident about their dressmaking and sewing machine skills. Join us for this relaxed class where you will learn how to use various functions of the sewing machine. During the course we will complete sewing projects whilst improving basic sewing machine skills. The aim is for you to become more confident with the use of the sewing machine. There will be the chance to learn how to read a pattern properly and to learn basic pattern making rules.
Join us in our fabulous sewing studio for this friendly, relaxed class where we will cover various functions of the sewing machine and learn some techniques along the way for a faster, more professional finish.
Please do not buy tools and equipment until you know that the course will run.
What will I learn on this course?
Learners will:
1. Be able to demonstrate the basics of threading and using a sewing machine
2. Be able to complete at least one simple project(s) learning tricks of the trade to achieve a more professional finish
3. Build on sewing skills as appropriate, learning at least one new technique along the way - for example double hemming, double stitching, top stitching or fabric markings

Is there anything I need to know about the course?
Learners will need the following tools and equipment please do not purchase until you are sure the course will run:
You will need to prepare the following tools and equipment before the start of the course:
A basic sewing kit including dressmaking scissors, un-picker, tape measure, notebook or folder, small scissors or snips, some sewing threads etc.
You WILL need some scraps of fabric to practice techniques on, and it is always a good idea to have an old (CLEAN) sheet or duvet cover to use as practice fabric.
Will there be additional costs?
You will need to buy some fabric and a pattern – but please wait until after the first week of the course so that we can discuss what you need.

Attendance Policy
In order to get the most out of your course you will need to attend as many sessions as possible. We recommend at least 85%. If you do have a holiday booked during term time please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes. If you are unavoidably ill or unable to attend, please contact 01634 338400 so that we can let your tutor know, and so they can send you any work you may have missed
How are digital skills used and enhanced on this course
Information technology may be used to introduce skills, techniques, and the work of other artists along with safe internet usage. Whilst you do not need any IT skills to enrol on this course, please do speak to the tutor if this is an area you would like to explore.
