Description

Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to look into the possibility of a new craft based career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress.

This sculpture introductory workshop is designed for those who would like to make a piece of decorative sculpture using clay and basic hand building techniques.
The theme and focus for this course is "Seed heads".
You will be guided through the design and making process to produce garden sculptures based on shapes from nature. Sticks / stakes are not included in the class fees but you can use garden stakes / bamboo to display your sculputres.
  

What will I learn on this course?
Learners will 1. Develop at least 1 individual sculpture. 2. Use a variety of tools and hand building techniques to create at least 1 sculpture. 3. Use at least 1 decorative technique. learners will also be expected to observe appropriate health & safety requirements in the pottery studio as set out in the MAE ground rules /learner contract

Is this course suitable for me?
Suitable for all, beginners to those with hand building experience. All materisl to build your sculptures are included in the proce. Sticks / stakes are not included in the class fees but you can use garden stakes / bamboo to display your sculputres.

Is there anything I need to know about the course?
- Please bring an apron and do not wear anything you value highly. - No open toed shoes in the pottery. - It would be advisable to bring a notebook and pen. - Learners with previous experience should bring in an example of their own work to help in the initial assessment process. Some of your guided learning hours will be used to complete paperwork such as ground rules and individual learning plans for the course. You will then have time to revisit these targets with your tutor to assess your progress. An amount of clay is included within the course fees, all of the items made during the course will be glazed with the learner’s choice of colour. A collection day for the finished piece will be arranged with the tutor.

What could I go on to do after this course?
Learners can follow this course with other related courses that the centre runs, such as Pottery, Sculpture and Ceramics or other garden sculpture courses on the themes of seed heads and green man heads. There are many other arts and craft courses on offer at Medway Adult Education. You may wish to concentrate or develop your skills with a particular medium such as painting in oils, pottery, stained glass, or advanced watercolour for example. We also have a BTEC Art and Design Skills course that you could progress towards. Medway Adult Education works with many partners locally such as Mid Kent Medway School of Art and the University of Kent; information about their courses can be found in our studios, café and on Moodle. You tutor may contact you prior to the course starting with resource / inspiration material for you to use / research.
