Description

Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to look into the possibility of a new art-based career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress.

This course is designed for those who would like to learn the first basic skills of jewellery making and for those who would like to continue building on existing skills to develop more techniques.

This course is designed for those who would like to learn the first basic skills of jewellery making and for those who would like to continue building on existing skills to develop more techniques.

Learners will be working at on a set project and guided through it step by step, you will have the opportunity to personalise your work. Advanced learners will be given the opportunity to elevate their skills.
You will have the opportunity to personalise your first piece and create unique and beautiful pieces of jewellery for yourself or for family and friends.

Learners will all recognize and follow the correct Health & safety procedures in the studio.

What will I learn on this course?
Learners will, depending on ability: 1. Learn how to cut on at least one piece or improve cutting technique on at least one piece. 2. Learn how to shape and form metal for at least one item or improve on the shape and form of metal for at least one item. 3. Develop a design for at least one piece of jewellery.

Is there anything I need to know about the course?
Learners will need the following tools and equipment please do not purchase until you are sure the course will run: You will need to bring: First class: ˇ a pen and notepad to the first class ˇ A fine tipped permanent black marker ˇ Safety glasses ˇ Apron Further classes: ˇ Basic tool kit to include: Saw frame and spare blades Flat nose pliers Chain pliers 1 oz Jobbing hammer 3 X needle files Metal ruler Emery sticks Carbide scriber A basic tool kit or individual components can be purchased from Cooksongold: https://www.cooksongold.com/Jewellery-Tools/ 0345 100 1122 Please be aware that once you enrol on a course you can apply for a student discount account with Cookson gold, just complete their form and attach a copy of your receipt. The tutor will advise you on materials required for the course on the first lesson. Precious metals, solder, and saw blades will need to be purchased from Cooksongold. Also see above for details on tools.

Attendance Policy
In order to get the most out of your course you will need to attend as many sessions as possible. We recommend at least 85%. If you do have a holiday booked during term time please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes. If you are unavoidably ill or unable to attend please contact 01634 338400 so that we can let your tutor know, and so they can send you any work you may have missed

How are digital skills used and enhanced on this course
Learners are encouraged to use the Medway Adult Education Moodle. Many learners use digital cameras to record their work or, for inspirational images that they may later use as a reference. From time to time the tutor may give learners example websites linked to current theme or activity to extend the knowledge or learning undertaken in class. Learners will be guided on internet safety.

Health and Safety
No open toed shoes in the studio. By participating in the live class you accept that you understand that jewellery making involves potentially hazardous tools and equipment and that such activity carries the risk of injury. You understand that it is your responsibility to judge your motor skills and physical ability. It is your responsibility to ensure that by participating in classes and activities from Medway Adult Education, you will not exceed your limits while performing such activity, and you will select the appropriate level of task for your skills and abilities. You understand that this is a live activity and you will need to be suitably dressed, you will need protect your work surface and be mindful of the correct Health & Safety processes when working with jewellery making equipment and resources. MAE is not responsible for damage to person.
