Description
Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to investigate the possibility of a new floristry-based career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress
Discover your flower design skills with this great 5-week course. Your tutor will guide you through at least 5 designs to include professional wired work and arrangements.
Join us for this friendly design course and create designs to impress.
You will demonstrate an understanding of the correct H&S requirements in the floral studio as set out in the MAE ground rules/ learner contract and produce a variety of designs to include :
a corsage
a basket arrangement
a Valentines display
a bouquet
a table design featuring a candle
Please note these may be subject to change
Please note that the course fee doesn't not include flowers or other materials required, we will try to advise on how to keep your flowers for longer to make them last potentially over 2 sessions and we will also encourage you to look for alternatives to shop bought materials from your garden.
Please do not buy tools and equipment until you know that the course will run.
What will I learn on this course?
Learners will:
1. be able to identify at least 3 different flowers and foliage suitable for the set floral designs
2. be able to demonstrate the use a range of mechanics to include floral foam and wire
3. create at least 3 designs which are secure and physically balanced and commercially viable
Is this course suitable for me?
This course is suitable for learners with little or no experience who wish to produce their own basic floral designs or extend their floristry knowledge.
Is there anything I need to know about the course?
Learners will need the following tools and equipment please do not purchase until you are sure the course will run:
You will need to prepare the following tools and equipment before the start of the course:
For your first lesson please bring the following:
an orchid - phalaeonopsis ( you may be able to purchase a small plant with a good few flowers on each stem)
Selection of leaves preferably ivy – (pick different sized leaves)
Apron to protect your clothes (optional)
Scissors (preferably floristry scissors)
Floristry wires and tape: (from Amazon/ Hobbycraft)
Para film tape
A selection of floristry wires
Secateurs, small wire cutters (optional)
An old tea towel or kitchen roll
Camera/phone (optional) to record your work and others
Pen and paper
Will there be additional costs?
Please take into consideration the cost of flowers when booking this course, this could be around £10-15 per week but it is possible to cut costs by using materials from the garden and re-using materials from one week to the next where possible.

Attendance Policy
In order to get the most out of your course you will need to attend as many sessions as possible. We recommend at least 85%. If you do have a holiday booked during term time please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes. If you are unavoidably ill or unable to attend please contact 01634 338400 so that we can let your tutor know, and so they can send you any work you may have missed

By participating in the floristry class you accept that you understand that floristry involves potentially hazardous tools and equipment and that such activity carries the risk of injury. You understand that it is your responsibility to judge your motor skills and physical ability.
It is your responsibility to ensure that by participating in classes and activities from Medway Adult Education, you will not exceed your limits while performing such activity, and you will select the appropriate level of task for your skills and abilities.
