Description
Crafts with clay will combine drawing, design, craft and working with clay on a range of tutor led projects. Learners will have opportunity to develop their own outcomes across the projects, but CLAY WILL NOT BE USED EVERY WEEK and some projects may not have a clay based outcome. This is not a pottery course, it is crafts that may incorporate the use of clay.
Learners must have completed an Initial assessment interview this academic year before enrolling.
It is possible to start courses throughout the year, and pro-rata payment options are available. So if you see a course has already started and there are spaces on there then it will be possible to join.
Every course has a Learning Support Assistant, working with the tutor.
This course aims to allow learners to experiment with art & crafts skills to produce various projects, working safely in the art / craft / clay studio.
What will I learn on this course?
Courses will take place in our fully accessible classroom. You will be guided through a series of step-by step projects by your tutor. You will be able to personalise and add your own ideas to your projects.
Learners will:
1. Research and prepare for at least one individual project.
2. Research and prepare for at least one group project.
3. Develop art & craft skills to produce at least 3 different outcomes.
Learners will also demonstrate a good understanding of working safely with art, craft and clay equipment. They will develop communication skills through group discussions and activities.
Is this course suitable for me?
This course is suitable for adults with learning difficulties or disabilities.
Learners must be able to follow simple instructions and be ready to work as part of a group and individually. They must be able to cope in a classroom environment and a potentially busy centre. If learners have unpredictable behaviours or potentially aggressive or violent tendencies that can be triggered by the learning environment, then they may not be suitable for these courses.
An initial assessment will be needed for all learners to establish their best starting point and what support we can provide. Please call 01634 338400 and ask to book a Supported Learning pre-course meeting/ assessment.
Please note that it will be essential to have all relevant information from carers / support workers to be able to support learners. However, if we find that we are unable to support the learner safely we reserve the right to withdraw the learner.
Is there anything else I need to know about the course?
You will need to have had an interview previously and a chat with the curriculum team before you join this class to make sure the class is suitable for you.
If you wish to attend classes accompanied by a carer or communication, then that will be fine but we will need to know in advance so that we can ensure that there will be enough space for everyone in the classroom.
If you wear glasses, please remember to bring them with you.
Arts & crafts can be messy so you will need to bring a clean apron with you every lesson. It is important that you don't mind getting your hands messy and you will need to wash your hands afterwards.
You will be expected to take part in helping to clean up after yourself as this is an important part of being in an art studio and working independently, following health and safety practices.
You and your carer (if applicable) will need to be suitably dressed for the studio and wear closed toe shoes.
You will need to be able listen to your tutor and follow instructions about health and safety to keep yourself and the class safe.
What could I go on to do after this course?
Medway Adult Education and Medway Council are proud to offer local residents with learning difficulties and disabilities our Supported Learning programme, which provides a range of creative and practical subjects. We aim to empower our learners, with appropriate challenge and stimulation to build confidence and contribute to them leading fuller lives, including more engagement in the community, and helping independence.
Your tutor can talk to you about other subject related courses available.
If you wish to explore your learning, work or career options, you can speak to a fully trained careers advisor on 0800 100 900. https://nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.uk
If you need further advice please telephone 01634 338400.

If you do have a holiday booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes.
