Description
This is an Art Specialism course level 1B, upon completing this course, learners can progress onto Level 1C but cannot redo this course at the same level or lower-level courses or go back onto general Drawing & painting classes. Learners can book onto any other Art specialism or Creative & Culture courses from 1A upwards.
This more advanced oil painting course is designed for learners who have already developed foundational skills in drawing and painting and wish to progress further in their artistic practice. The course focuses on developing a personal artistic style through more complex projects, including themed series, advanced still life, landscape, and portrait studies. Through challenging practical activities and ongoing feedback, you will strengthen your creative skills, build a cohesive body of work, and deepen your conceptual understanding of oil painting as a professional art form.

What Will I Learn On This Course?
By the end of the course, learners will:
1. Refine drawing skills by applying advanced techniques, including accurate observational studies, complex use of light and shadow, dynamic perspective, and balanced composition for professional presentation.
2. Extend painting skills by confidently using oil paints and related media to explore advanced techniques such as glazing, impasto, scumbling, and creating complex textures and layered effects.
3. Produce a cohesive series of at least two to three original artworks that demonstrate a sophisticated application of both technical skills and personal artistic expression.

Is This Course Suitable For Me?
This course is ideal for learners who have completed a previous oil painting course or have equivalent experience and are ready to develop their skills to a more advanced level. It offers the opportunity to explore complex materials and techniques, build a professional-quality portfolio and refine your personal artistic style.
Is There Anything Else I Need To Know About This Course?
Please be aware that whilst this course is practical in nature some sessions will include theory and professional related training such as H&S, risk assessments, public liability etc
Learners will need the following tools and equipment please do not purchase until you are sure the course will run:
You will need to prepare the following tools and equipment before the start of the course:
• Extended set of oil paints, including a full range of colours
• A wider selection of brushes suitable for detailed and expressive work (flat, round, filbert, and fan brushes
• A large palette for mixing complex colour schemes
• Palette knives for both mixing and direct application of paint
• Canvas boards or stretched canvases (larger sizes may be recommended for advanced projects)
• Sealable container for odourless solvent (e.g., low-odour white spirit or turpentine)
• Linseed oil and other suitable mediums for advanced techniques (e.g., stand oil, liquin)
• Rags or paper towels for cleaning
• Apron or old clothing to protect against spills
Will There Be Additional Costs?
Learners are expected to provide their own materials for most activities; however, easels and drawing boards will be available for use. A list of required materials will be shared at appropriate stages of the course. Please consult with the tutor before making significant purchases.

What Is The Attendance Policy?
Multiple sessions-
To get the most out of your course you will need to attend as many sessions as possible. We recommend at least 90%. If you do have a holiday booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes. If you are unavoidably ill or unable to attend, please contact 01634 338400 so that we can let your tutor know, and so they can send you any work you may have missed
