Description

Join our heritage skill wood carving course designed for both beginners and those looking to refresh their skills, where you'll receive expert guidance on tool selection and usage. Throughout the course, you'll learn practical techniques including chip carving, low relief carving, and three-dimensional carving, all while engaging in design planning and project execution. By the end, you'll have the opportunity to complete at least one unique project from start to finish.

What Will I Learn On This Course?
1. Create a design plan using accurate measurement for at least one project 2. Accurately transfer the design to wood to create a project 3. Use a large gouge (a curved shaped chisel) to remove excess wood (roughing out) to create a basic form and use appropriate tools to finish the design Whether you would like to learn new creative skills or to investigate the possibility of a new woodworking -based career, MAE Community Learning courses can provide you with a stepping stone to progress

Is This Course Suitable For Me?
This course in an excellent starting point for beginners who want to explore basic wood carving skills or for those with a little experience who want to revisit skills.

Is There Anything Else I Need To Know About?
Please be aware that whilst this course is practical in nature some sessions will include theory and professional related training such as H&S, risk assessments, public liability etc Learners will need the following tools and equipment please do not purchase until you are sure the course will run: • You will need to follow the rules of the woodwork studio to maintain Health & Safety procedures and keep yourself and others safe. Please wear closed toe shoes and bring an apron to every lesson. For your first session you will need to bring the following tools and equipment: Apron or overall • Dust mask • Basic drawing materials (pencil, rubber and sharpener) • Pen You will be provided with a sketchbook

Will There Be Additional Costs?
You will require some of your own tools and wood but please wait until after your first session to buy wood and tools so that your tutor can advise you.

What Is The Attendance Policy?
Multiple sessions- To get the most out of your course you will need to attend as many sessions as possible. We recommend at least 90%. If you do have a holiday booked during term time, please let the tutor know in advance so that we can help you catch up on missed sessions and ensure that you still achieve the course outcomes. If you are unavoidably ill or unable to attend, please contact 01634 338400 so that we can let your tutor know, and so they can send you any work you may have missed
